Shockwave Therapy in Peterborough

Fast, effective relief for stubborn tendon and soft tissue injuries.

If you’re struggling with a chronic injury that hasn’t responded to rest, exercises, or manual therapy, Shockwave Therapy at Prestons Health could be the solution. This cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment helps stimulate your body’s natural healing response, reducing pain and accelerating recovery.

We provide shockwave therapy from our Peterborough physiotherapy clinic, based inside David Lloyd Club, Thorpe Wood Business Park.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy (also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, or ESWT) is a non-surgical treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to treat soft tissue injuries. Delivered through a hand-held device, the waves pass through the skin to the affected area, helping to:

  • Increase blood flow
  • Stimulate cell repair and tissue regeneration
  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Break down scar tissue or calcifications
  • Reactivate the healing process in stubborn injuries

It’s particularly effective for tendinopathies and soft tissue conditions that haven’t improved with other treatment approaches.

Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy

At Prestons Health, we use shockwave therapy to treat a wide range of injuries and persistent pain conditions, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfer’s Elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)
  • Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS)
  • Calcific Tendinopathy (especially in the shoulder)

Your physiotherapist will assess your condition to ensure shockwave is appropriate, and discuss how it fits into your wider rehabilitation plan.

What to Expect From Treatment

A typical course involves 4 sessions (Although we will treat up to 6), spaced one week apart. Each session lasts around 20 minutes and is delivered by a qualified physiotherapist trained in shockwave protocols.

You may feel some discomfort during treatment, but most patients tolerate it well. There is no downtime, and you can return to normal activities shortly after each session (within the guidance of your physio).

Is There Clinical Evidence?

Yes, shockwave therapy is strongly supported by research, especially for persistent tendon issues. It’s widely used in professional sport and by NHS orthopaedic departments.

Studies show that shockwave therapy can:

  • Reduce pain
  • Improve function and mobility
  • Help patients avoid surgery
  • Achieve success rates of up to 70% in chronic tendinopathies
(Moya et al., 2018; Dedes et al., 2018)

Testimonials

“I have had two sessions of shockwave therapy on my persistent running hamstring injury I’ve had for over two years. After being under an NHS physio for six months and not really getting anywhere, I decided I was going to look at other options and I’m so glad I did! I had immediate results from the first session and I’m looking forward to completing my course of treatment.”

Kerry G

“I had a Physio assessment with Shockwave therapy on my feet. Caroline was very thorough, professional and knowledgeable. I will be back for a course of treatment so I can get back running again.”
